GMC Dashes Consumer Dreams By Axing New Base Hummer EV Plans

A new GMC Hummer EV trim scheduled to arrive for the 2025 model year appears to be axed. This new trim was to serve as the new base model with a smaller battery and shorter equipment list than the 2X.

The GMC Hummer EV 2 is a new model that would have brought a much more affordable entry point for those ready to drive this electric vehicle.

If the new EV 2 were part of the mix, the starting price for a Hummer EV would be $79,995. This might not sound affordable price for many, but the 2X model starts at $98,845.

The buzz and allure of the higher trims of the Hummer EV put announcements of the lower-priced base model on the back burner for a few years.

The GMC Hummer EV 2 was first announced in 2021 but never made it into production. It was supposed to go on sale this spring to be the cheapest version of this high-priced EV, but GM’s plans have changed.

Although most EVs experience slower sales than in 2023, the GMC Hummer EV models continue to show strong results. Considering the $100,000-plus price of the SUV and truck versions of this EV.

GMC didn’t anticipate high-volume sales figures. Still, sales during Q4 2023 were 2,028 and continued to be strong during the first quarter of 2024. .

Those final quarter sales figures break down to 825 Hummer EV Pickup trucks and 1,203 versions of the Hummer EV SUV.  GMC originally planned to ofer the new Hummer EV 2 and 2X for the 2024 model year.

Both use similar equipment and provide 625 horsepower with a 250-mile driving range. The Hummer EV 2 would have had a 400-volt fast-charging capability.

Those waiting for the new, lower-priced Hummer EV 2 to hit the market, are feeling serious disappointment. This new base model isn’t heading to the market, leaving the 2X as the base model.
